FAQs about the Looking for Alaska Movie
Before we get to the day's proper blogging, My dear friend Dean has recently taken a break from constantly complaining that I don't link to his web site often enough to begin improving this Web site in various ways. For instance, I now apparently have an RSS and/or Atom feed, whatever those are. More exciting improvements forthcoming.

But about that movie: Lately I have gotten a lot of questions about the "Looking for Alaska" movie, and so I thought I would answer some.
Q. Is "Looking for Alaska" being made into a movie?
A. That depends on what your definition of is is. About a year ago, the movie rights for "Alaska" were sold to Paramount, with Josh Schwartz (who created The O.C.) agreeing to write and direct the movie. The producers are also really great. Things are moving forward, but it will be quite a while before a movie starts shooting, so don't start standing in line outside your local theater just quite yet. (Incidentally, did you know that famous author Cecil Castellucci stood in line for like four months for Star Wars: Episode I?)
Q. How do you feel about the idea of "Alaska" being a movie?
A. Good. I think Josh is a very good writer, which helps keep me from worrying. But regardless, you can't worry too much about these things. To me, a book and the movie it is "based" on are only tangentially related. I've never been worried about the movie being an accurate adaptation of the book--partly because I'd rather have the movie be good than faithful, and partly because I don't think it's possible to make an adaptation that's "true" to a book. There's no way Alaska will look on screen like she looks in your head, is what I'm saying. And that's okay.
Q. Who is going to play Alaska? Pudge? Takumi? Do you think they'll cast the movie with people from The O.C.? Will Mischa Barton play Alaska? Etc.
A. I have no idea who will play anyone, but I rather doubt the cast of The O.C. will be featured in "Alaska."
Q. Have you met Josh Schwartz?
A. I have.
Q. Is he really really hot?
A. He's a nicely put together fellow.
Q. Is he hotter than Seth Cohen? Does he look like Seth Cohen?
A. Let's talk about issues of substance. (Also, this is not really one of my areas of expertise.)
Q. Will there be any open casting calls?
A. I don't know. But if there are, I will certainly let you know via this very blog.
Q. Do you know what's going to happen next year on The O.C.?
A. No. Honestly I don't even know exactly what happened this year on The OC, because we're always busy on Thursdays and so I wait for the DVDs to come out.
Q. Marissa dies.
A. Thanks, jerkface.
Q. Everyone says that Hollywood is dirty and horrible. Do you agree?
A. I don't know. It has its dirty and horrible parts. And I would never move there on account of how it seems to work out poorly for people in my family. But some of the writers I like the most live and work in Hollywood, and through the "Alaska" movie project I've met some people who I really admire. My experience has been very, very positive.
Q. So far.
A. Right. So far. You're quite pessimistic, aren't you?
Q. It's my nature.
A. Fair enough. Any other questions?
Q. I think that's it.
A. Okay. Well if anyone else has any questions, they should feel free to leave them in comments.

That's a dirty lie. I never stopped complaining that you don't link to me enough.
Anyway, I'm disappointed to have discovered just now that iMDb has restricted free access to films "in development." I'd been enjoying the Looking for Alaska message board, particularly the threads concerning casting.
Last I checked, though, I believe the consensus picks were: Shannon Elizabeth as Alaska, Bruce Willis as Miles, President Palmer as Takumi, and Dakota Fanning as the Colonel.
I agree that these are all perfect, but I'm on the fence about having the Weekday Warriors played by snakes on a plane.
I think the film's setting should be relocated from Culver Creek to the planet Naboo. All the weekday Warriors could be played by Gungans. Then at least Alaska and the Colonel's hatred of them would make more sense.
Oh silly. It wasn't 4 months. It was 4 YEARS!!!
Lou Rawls Star is my bed.
I don't think I'll be able to see this movie. It won't work without Wes Anderson.
Actually, nothing works without Wes Anderson.
Looking for Alaska is quite emotional. How are they going to feature Alaska getting hit by the steering wheel?
I CAN"T WAIT FOR THE MOVIE! Loved the book
I was wondering if you (as in John Green) Could possibly give us any idea how to contact Mr. Josh Schwartz? It would be a huge help, because, I am looking to audtion for somehting in the movie. Wether it be an extra or alaska her self. I am a hope full actress and I adore your book so it would be excellent of you to kindly post this infromation if you have it.
Like Candice said i CANT WAIT FOR THE MOVIE the book was incredible i loved it i hope the movie is as good as the book
So I have read the book 50 million times. Thought it was amazing. Cry every time. Well anyway, I hope the movie is good though I do hope it to be faithful.
But honestly, reading the first comment about actors.
Bruce. Willis. As. Miles. You have got to be kidding me! He's young! Willis is old! Ughgldkas;djsd I dunno my opinion, don't know much who the other actors are. But okie dok =)
i'm doing a book report and i have to make a movie poster. a cast list would be wonderful if you have any recent news.
and if you could e-mail (goosenotchicken@yahoo.com) it to me i'd b forever grateful, and it would make my day.
I swear to god, if they cast Emma Roberts as Alaska, I will shoot myself. They need to find an unknown actor for everyone. If we all have ideas about who the actual person is, playing the part, then it will take away from the characters. I think they should just find people who have never been in a movie before, see if they're good, and then put them in the movie. No people from the OC, no one from stupid teen movies like Mean Girls. People that will actually mean something to you who are actually right for the part who can accurately depict the characters, even if it's not exactly what we expected. Because Alaska Young is the movie. And if Mischa Barton or someone like that gets the part, well Jesus Christ, that ruins the entire film.
this book is the most amazing book i have ever read and i really cant wait for the movie to come out. i'd love to go to the auditions for this film...it would be great. i agree that the actors shouldn't really be already known cause the people in the book are students. so they cant really be older, famous actors. it would look better if they were just normal kids chosen especially for the movie.
Ali J...you do know Dean is kidding right...I mean, you don't actually think he's serious...? Dakota Fanning is a twelve year old little blond girl.....he's making a joke.
Anyway. People are discussing Shia for Pudge. Don't know if that's a good idea or not because I think he's gotten too old, as much as I like his acting...
shia as pudge would be... weird. he's not... pudge-like. just not at all.
i agree with the whole unknown-actors thing. for the 'gang' anyway, maybe the eagle and hyde could be a relatively known actor but alaska, pudge, takumi and the colonel should be unknowns. no disney kids or any of that crap.
im sorry to the mischa barton fans, but there is no way in hell she could play alaska. the girl has a personality of a plank and alaska is such a vibrant character. they need an unknown person to play her, someone real and gritty and who has a special and different kind of beauty. not some shallow, boring member of the hollywood brat pack.
I definitely know where they should shoot the movie. A little place called Indian Springs Village, AL. It's a pretty awesome place.
it would be fantastic if you could post any casting call information as soon as you find some.
btw, i absolutely love Looking For Alaska. the book is beautifully written and evokes a bunch of emotions, and you couldn't have developed alaska's character any better. you made her personality so vivid.
Umm... I think yall are weird. I think the unknown actor/ actress with would be cool, but alot of movies I've seen with unknow actors / actresses suck. Like they suck alot.
It needs to be some one that can seriously act. Everyone should be in tears in the theater. Not just me, hints I am a sucker for sad movies.
The book was amazing. If my mom knew what was in the book she would have NEVER given it to me. Thank goodness she only read the blurb.
I cried all three times I read the book. That doesnt seem like alot but I seriously closed the book on the last page and opened it to the first page. AMAZING! I cried so hard I had to put the book down, which was really hard to do because I couldnt stop reading!!
I cant wait for the movie!!! My friends think I'm obsesive. Maybe I am. Who knows...?
please please please find an unknown for Alaska. I really agree with a person who said before that it should NOT be any from any of the teen chick movies that are out now. Of course, no unknown will work either. Everyone has a different picture in the their head of what she looks like and ... you can't please everyone.
Does anyone know where you can find updates on the movie? I've been looking around, but I haven't seen any. IMDB is limiting to IMDB Pro users only.
i thing an amazing person to play alaska would be Mandy Musgrave who plays ashley on south of nowhere.
To be completely honest, I am going to be very picky as to whether or not I like this movie. I absolutely loved to book, and, in my opinion, movies do not usually match up. Due to this reasoning, I agree with everyone who said an unknown would be excellent for Alaska. However, this girl would seriously need to be able to act. Alaska is an amazing character, and I would be very impressed if someone could play her as she is in the book. If anybody has any information about casting or auditions, would you please leave a comment about it? By the way, Dean's (1st comment) casting was funny. Excellent choices...
Looking for Alaska is my all time favorite book. I have read it several times. When I describe this book to friends who ask me about it I tell them I can't describe it. I tell them to read it once set it down for a few months and then read it again because it's like a movie you can watch over and over again.
My opinion about the whole movie thing is...it will be Great.! or I will turn it off 10 minutes in. I am really picky about this one.
Hopefully the movie shows the true meanings and feelings that come out in the book.
I think the producers of the movie should take into acount that this book has given many people inspiration for their lives and it will be hard to top.
"I go to seek a Great Perhaps."
Will Looking for Alaska have a sequel? Like what happens to Pudge in his continuing years at Culver Creek?
dean was making a joke. Ha ha?
anyways, if alaska turns into a typical hollywood movie, it will be quite dissapointing. i completely agree that it should be cast with unknowns, or if not unknowns, just genuinely talented actors. evan rachel wood, i think, would make a good alaska. shia wouldn't be too bad, but they could do better.
first of all id just like to say that this book is the most honest and real piece of literature that i have ever read...in short looking for alaska means the world to me and i have taken so much from it and learned so much about life from it. when i found out looking for alaska was going to be made into a movie and seriously considered busting into tears. personally i feel that allowing hollywood or anyone for that matter to create a movie based on the book will only deface it's value and make it a mockery no movie can ever replace the feeling and the honesty of the book and it disgusts me that someone will even try.
any idea when it is going to be released?
Okay.
FYI to everyone out there that's freaking about the whole "book to movie" comparisons.
Helloooo!
If you'll just let the book and the movie be two separate things you'll probably enjoy it a whole lot more.
It works the same with a lot of books.
Yes.
Some movies leave out details from the books they're based on (emphasis on the words "based on").
But they have their own unique qualities that make them their own product.
If every movie based on a book had every detail included, the movies would be several hours long.
SO chill out and let the movies be movies and the books be books.
John Green said it himself.
He'd rather the movie be good on it's own that be faithful to the book's storyline.
Thank you.
There's my 2 cens.
Take it or leave it.
Either way, I'm out.
Peace.
I am, of course, going to be one of those crazy people who go I LOVE THIS BOOK!
Which I do. It's one of those books where the ending makes you see a different take on things, the way you have to sit and just think for an hour. I am also glad they are making it a movie, however, I defiantly doubt they will capture the real emotions portrayed in the book.
With that being said, I am still super happy that it's going to be a movie, because I'm one who can't read a book twice, yet can't seem to get enough of certain books.
So it's really good for me.
Also, Just want to say, I am defiantly going to be one waiting forever just for the movie to come out! I can't wait till the details come out(castings, and such).
I am so excited(As I've possibly said this whole comment).
So here's to the enthusiasm that went into this right when I found out about the movie!
((Honestly, this made my night!))
With my luck and the way Hollywood casting's going these days (ahem, Twilight), we'll be looking at a Jamie Lynn Spears version of Alaska Young.
And then I die.
Jamie Lynn can't be Alaska, she's pregnant, silly ;)
Seriously though, I agree that Pudge's gang should be played by unknown/lesser known actors.
And I can't stand Shia LeBeouf :S
I read "Looking For Alaska" and loved it. It made me cry. Strangely, I like books that can do that. I'm excited for the movie, but also not. Usually movies tend to mess things up. Another of my favorite books, "Twilight", is being made into a movie also. I hope they both turn out alright. If not, I'd feel like the people who make the movies are destroying wonderful works of art. =/
Oh, and I'd like to agree with "anonymous" about the casting of Twilight. They should have used unknown people; it would make it much more convincing and enjoyable. Also, COULD EDWARD POSSIBLE BE ANY UGLIER?!?!?!?!?!?! ROBERT PATTINSON?!?!?!?!? EWWWWWWWWWWW!!!!!!!!!!!! Ugh. Bleh. I was SO disappointed I almost cried. They've already destroyed the movie.
Sorry, John. I know you probably don't care about this issue. I just had to post in agreement with "anonymous".
I totally love this book, make it into a movie!
yesh yesh yesh :)
Hearing that Looking for Alaska is being made into a movie has made me feel a variety of things, just as the book did. I feel that watching the movie on screen will take away the effect that the book has on all of us. We all read the book and build relationships with each of the characters; ones that can not be shared with anybody else. That's what upsets me. I'm also afraid (and I hate to say that word, afraid) that the movie will turn out to be nothing like the book. And quite frankly, I can't handle that...
Do we know if the movie has been casted yet? I would absolutely love to find that out as soon as possible... Alaska Young is my idol (except for her demise of course) and I would give anything to be her...
Hopefully everything turns out as well as we expect it to be. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. Thanks.
michael cera= pudge.. what do you think?
Michael Cera = Pudge = YES.
He's a bit on the short side if you want to be nitpicky, but he to me, personally, he seems like the kind of actor that can play a believable Miles while still being fiarly well-known in Hollywood at the same time.
With the plus side that he'll bring a built-in fan base to the movie.
Michael Cera as pudge. please!!
ooh, and Remembering Sunday, by All Time Low should be in the soundtrack. and possibly Mayday Parade? I'm inn love with that book...before i read it,i never really had a favorite book. Now i do. its amazing. i'm looking forward to the movie, but i'm also afraid. I dont want my view of the book to be spoiled by the movie. However, its a risk i'm willin to take. Anything for Alaska.
Oh, and nobody stupid like Emma roberts playing Alaska, i'm begging you.
If anyone want to talk about the book/movie with me, email me at
nj2694@yahoo.com
but put something about LFA or something in the subject line, so i know who u are =]
Well its July 19, 2008 and its been 2 years since this Blog was posted. So is their a certain date yet for the movie? I'm so excited about their being a movie on one of my favorite books and i'm dying to know when its coming out! And if anyone knows if there's an open casting call please let me know! my email is cherryicee32@aim.com or just reply to this comment.
thanx,
Lola
gasp! the above comment was left in the future!
I'm pretty sure that it's going to be released at the end of 2010, or the beginning of 2011.
so im pretty sure John that you would love Amber Heard as Alaska. Just think about it and take a look into it. As long as she is the most beautiful girl on screen, im sure the movie will be great
ive been so excited for the alaska movie ever since i heard about it. and Josh Shwartz is amazing for creating the OC so i have no doubt that it would be a great film. is there any chance that they would bail on the movie and it wouldnt happen?
AARON YOO as TAKUMI would be great
I sincerly hope that the film had an indie feel to it and not a sheeny shiny gossipgirl/the OC feel...
I do love the OC & GG though.
Will the auditions be open and will they be exclusivly in America or will theyre be some in the UK?
Absolutely fantastic book!! AMAZING! I cried so much!!!! I LOVED IT!! Oh, when I finished reading, I was just like... I MISS ALASKA SO MUCH!! lol..... no joke. hehehe
Then when I found out it was being made into a movie, I was just like OMFG!! TOTALLY MADE MY DAY!!!! Coz I was thinking while I was reading it for a second time, This would make a freakin' awesome movie! I don't really care who they cast, I just can't wait to hear more about whats happening! When is filming starting? Do you know yet?
AAARRRGGGHHHHH!!!! I AM SOOO EXCITED!!
